Police said Acaye shot and killed Simon Omona, a 24-year-old peasant from Lulayi village, in a revenge attack after the suspect had allegedly killed his brother.

KAMPALA | A manhunt for Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Moses Acaye has been issued, with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Alebtong District wanted over fatal shooting of a suspect.

In a statement, Police said Acaye shot and killed Simon Omona, a 24-year-old peasant from Lulayi village, in a revenge attack after the suspect had allegedly killed his brother.

The incident took place on February 20 at about 11am.

Acaye, armed with a pistol, reported his presence at Appa Police Station on the same day, claiming to be following up on investigations into the murder of his brother, Opio Emmanuel, who was killed by a mob on February 10, 2024.

Acaye was part of a team that responded to Apaa trading center after receiving information about one of the suspects.

Upon reaching the trading center, he drew his pistol and shot at Omona.

Unfortunately, despite being rushed to a nearby clinic, Omona succumbed to his injuries.

Acaye handed over the pistol for safekeeping at Lacor Hospital Police Post on February 24, 2022, before disappearing.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga expressed deep regret over Acaye's actions, highlighting that they constitute a gross abuse of police authority and excessive use of force, resulting in the senseless murder of Omona.

Enanga urged Acaye to surrender himself and defend his actions.

"We regret the harm caused by our officer to the victim's family, friends, and relatives," said Enanga.

"We are committed to ensuring that Acaye is arrested and brought to court to face charges of murder and theft of a police motorcycle."

Enanga assured the public that relentless efforts are being made to apprehend Acaye and emphasised the police's commitment to upholding the sanctity of life and delivering justice in this tragic case.

Anyone with information regarding Acaye's whereabouts is urged to come forward and assist in his swift arrest.
